Can Face Primers Be Used On / Around Eyes ?

The answer to this question like most other life altering ones is ...

It Depends.

Depends on which face primer you're referring to. Here are the answers to four of the most popular face primers.

SKINN Orchid Gel Mattifying Treatment

Yes, the SKINN Orchid Gel mattefying can be used around the eye area. The creator of the product Dimitri James has given us a green signal on this one.

Hands down my most favorite primer. I have been using this for over a year all over my face and on my eyes right before applying concealer. It fills up the tiny fine lines / my one big crease and keeps the concealer looking fresh and smooth . Absolute beauty !

The brand also has a product designed specially for the eyes - Insta Fill For Eyes. I've tried this and it is amazing too. You need just a dot of it for the whole eye area. Love it !

Smashbox Photo Finish Primer

The lovely Lori Taylor - the Lead Makeup Artist at Smashbox had this to say " Sure it’s amazing under the eye. And the color correctors help with discoloration."

So, yes the super popular Photo Finish Primer can be used around the eye area too !

Smashbox also has a eye primer called the Photo Finish Lid Primer

Tarte Clean Slate Face Primer

This is what the wonderful folks at Tarte said about the multi uses of Clean Slate.
"Yes, clean slate is safe to use on your eyes (it is a natural product). "

Another yes !

As for a eye primer from Tarte, this fall they launched lifted™ natural eye primer with Firmitol ™ which is an eye primer that actually lifts and tightens the skin 10 minutes post application.

MAC Prep + Prime Skin

Unfortunately MAC Prep + Prime is not designed to used around the eye area.

That's a no, folks.

However MAC does have the Prep + Prime Eye which was designed for the eye area !

So there we go ! Another mystery solved. If you have questions on any other face primers and would like me to find out if its safe for use around eye area - just send me a note. I'll try and get back to you on it !

oh my goodness. you read my mind. I've been listening to usher for the past two days...and I just discovered this video clip. Soooooo cute!

As for make-up...how do I keep the eyeliner that I put on my lower lash line from sliding down my face (creating the illusion of severe dark circles under my eyes)as the day progresses? Is a primer needed? Thanks!

Wow I can tell you put lotsa research into your posts! Nice one.
If you love Usher, I'm thinking maybe you'll like Tupac. Look, I know it's old school, but it's still cool...and the lyrics are mostly amazing too.

Hi MJ !

Wow ! I don't think I could do that. Do you think it was arranged forehand ? Way too intense. LOL !

HI Husha !

Aww...thanks doll. It feels good to be appreciated !

M.J. said... @ December 16, 2009 at 9:24 AM

I don't know if it was pre-arranged, but I'm like you; I sooo couldn't do that. I probably would have had a heart attack, fainted, developed momentary epilepsy AND peed on myself the minute he got within a 20 foot radius of me! LOL

Anyway, do you have a solution to the question I posted?? Sorry to be obsessive, but I HATE how my liner makes me look like I have racoon eyes 2 hrs later...HATE IT!!
thanks :-)

Hi MJ ,

there r a few things one can do to prevent it.

1. If you're using eye pencil get a long staying / water proof pencil. I've had good results with Urban Dacay 24 /7 & Julie Hewett Noir pencil. A lot people love Stila Kajal - apparently it stays put well.

2. Use a long wear gel/creme liner. Long wear ones generally have better staying power and don't bleed and spread around. I like the ones from Bobbi brown and Estee Lauder. The Milani Liquid liner is great for extra extra long wear without any hint of smudge. Its scary how long it stays put. And its a pain to take off too.

3. Set the liner with some powder shadow in the same shade.

4. Becca has a product called sealer . It comes with the powder shadow. With it you draw the line and seal it with the sealer so it doesn't smudge.

Hope this helps !

Thank you for the post and for answering the question about eyeliner bleeding...this has been one of my burning questions too....
