I would never have tried a chemical peel if it wasn't for my otherwise pretty good skin being in a bad state for the past few months. The winter started the dry cycle and my skin hasn't been the same again. I just want it to go back to being normal. So in my desperate attempt I tried the Glycolic peel only because I read a million or so online reviews that said this was a very safe at home peel. So in the name of beauty blogging I gave it a try and have lived another day to tell the story...

The Story Of How Glycolic Peels Work

When it comes to glycolic peels, timing is everything—a truly effective glycolic facial treatment requires a perfectly timed neutralizer step to deactivate the potent active ingredient. Because many women don’t know how to navigate this delicate process, they leave the treatment to the experts or risk irritation, redness and sensitivity from peeling incorrectly at home.

How This Brazilian Glycolic Peel Works

In this Brazilian Peel by Advanced Home Actives, the two-step process is combined and simplified into a one time process. The active ingredients and neutralizer are combined in pre-measured, equal amounts to act on skin until the time-released neutralizer automatically deactivates the glycolic acid within 10 minutes. The peel and neutralizer are housed in two separate chambers, preserving the purity and potency of the ingredients until you dispense the two formulas simultaneously from the patented syringe-like packaging. Because the single-step process controls the pH of the glycolic acid during the 10-minute treatment time, there’s no tradeoff between potency and safety. "

My Experience

Everything sounded safe so I proceeded with the treatment. Still with caution.

You take the syringe and empty it into the palm of your hand. You'll see two blobs - one neutralizer and the other is the peel. Now using two fingers mix them together and you'll feel the peel warming up. Act fairly quickly and spread it all over your face and neck like you would with any other peel. Set the time to 10 minutes and wait.

Up until 8 minutes I didn't feel anything. It was just like I had a simple serum on my face. At the end of 8 minutes I felt a slight tingle. Even my Clinique masks tingle a more than this one did. Its a very very small tingle. Then at 10 minutes I washed it off with water.

Results

Given that it was a glycolic and so much is written about all that it can do - I had extremely high expectations once I decided to go for it. I'd say it did very well considering all I wanted it to do. I felt the softness return back to my face after so many months of bad texture. This I am most thankful for. Plenty of my dry spots got exfoliated out. There was a marked difference in the brightness of my face. No redness, no irritation or any other issues.

This is a once a week for four weeks treatment and I feel positive that at the end of four weeks I will have a lot more benefits from this peel.

From the clinical results I learnt that this is an excellent treatment for folks with oily skin. Though I have dry skin i am going to go ahead with it because I can use the exfoliation. I am not doing any other exfoliating during the week. Just regular moisturizing. Will get back to you at the end of four weeks with my overall result !

The Brazilian Peel by Advanced Home Actives ($78) is available at Sephora.

Thanks for your review.

I'm very interested to hear how it goes next time round. Can't remember where I read it, but would half a syringe be enough for a treatment?

Hi Milli !

I needed the whole syringe for face neck and some chest. So if its just the face half should be enough. But they ask not to store the half. It must all be used up at a time ...I am guessing if its too much for face we can use it on hands ...

I am going to try this and hopefully it will do as great of a job, let me do the peel more often (that I really need to) and even save a few bucks.

Could I wash it off sooner do you think, like if it burns?

Hi Sophia !

Yes, if you happen to feel any burn or anything else you are doubtful about just wash it off - this applies to any skincare product. Like I mentioned in the post I had some mild tingling a about 8 minutes but no other sensation with this one.

Hi Wanderlust !

You know I had the same scare first when I saw the syringe thingy. I have a huge fear of injections. Thankfully it has nothing to do with needles.

Yes - it helps with acne scars according to their clinical studies. Here are some stats from their press release

Clinical studies have demonstrated the following dramatic results:

• 89% of subjects found skin to look clearer
• 91% of subjects found their skin less oily
• 100% of subjects had improvements in skin brightness in at least one area of the face
• After just one treatment, skin was softer, smoother, brighter, firmer and better toned
• After four weekly applications, Brazilian Peel visibly reduces fine lines and wrinkles
**************************************************

The unique benefits of the powerful one-step, foolproof system include:

• Removing the upper layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh new skin below
• Enhancing moisture retention and improving the efficacy of treatment products
• Hastening cell regeneration to bring fresh, new, soft skin to the surface
• Restoring skin’s elastin and collagen-building function to tighten, firm and plump skin
• Reducing the appearance of fine line, wrinkles, blemishes and dark spots
• Repairing and reversing sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, dullness, roughness and dryness
• Reducing the damaging effects of free radicals
• Soothing and calming via Magnesium and Sulfur
• Maintaining a radiant, youthful complexion with continued weekly use
• No redness or irritation

Hi Chris !

Hmmm....what did the skin technicians tell ya ? Did they mention anything about skin going back to square one , once you stop ?

This peel does not peel skin off like the diamond peel. We just apply it and wash it off.

However a lot of peels that take off a layer of skin have the side effect of making skin extremely sensitive to sunlight. Some suggest using high SPF Sunscreen as a must. I am wondering if this was the case with the diamond peel and they ignored / forgot mentioning this...

I must also mention that almost none of the peels have a permanent effect. Most are temporary - they vary only in the time period. Hnece brides go in for the treatments just before wedding so look nice on bright on D day ;)

Hi Mads !

I wrote to the folks at AHA and asked them if it was safe for acne prone skin and they got back to me with "Yes it is – and it’s actually proven to help reduce the appearance of blemishes "

Hope this helps !
