Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer, will affect over 1,000,000 people this year. The two most frequent types—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—are highly curable. The third type, melanoma, occurs less but accounts for more than 79% of skin cancer deaths. With summer fast approaching, now is a good time to get up-to-speed on the best ways to keep skin safe. Dermatologist Dr. Verallo-Rowell, the brains behind hypoallergenic skin care line VMV Hypoallergenics and its cult sun care products, Armada, offers her top tips on how to do just that.

THE DO'S

DO Use A Sunscreen That Protects Against Both UVA and UVB Light. Even indoor visible and infrared light can cause skin hyperpigmentations, so it’s a good idea to wear sun screen on the face every day)

DO Apply More Sunscreen Than You Think You Need . At least 1 oz. for the entire body

DO Apply Sunscreen 30 Minutes Prior To Going Outside. So ingredients have time to bind to the skin

DO Re-Apply Sunscreen Every 2 Hours When Exposed To Sun. Every 1 hour when swimming

DO Wear A Wide Brim Hat And Sunglasses, To shade the face, head, ears and necks for further protection and to prevent early signs of aging.

DO Be Even More Cautious About Sun Exposure . If you have high skin cancer risk factors including blonde or red hair, light eyes, light skin, a family history of skin cancer, or a large number of moles

DO Ensure The Ultra-Sensitive Skin Of Babies Is Protected With A Purely Physical Sunscreen Try VMV’s Armada Baby SPF 50+ Sun And Light Screen

THE DONT'S

DON’T Use Sunscreen Past Its Expiration Date. Treat it as any other over the counter drug

DON’T Use Sunscreen That Contains Fragrance. As a photo-allergen, fragrance can react with sunlight to produce hyperpigmentations on the skin

DON’T Forget Your Lips. Use a product with at least SPF 30 UVA & UVB protection (VMV offers a hypoallergenic SPF 60 lip balm that repairs chapped lips and protects against the sun’s harmful rays)

DON’T Assume Your SPF 15 Tinted Or Daily Moisturizer Is Enough Protection For The Face. Try VMV’s Armada SPF 30 or 45 for a lightweight, UVA & UVB indoor and outdoor sun & light screen to keep skin wrinkle free

DON’T Spend Extended Periods Of Time In The Sun During The Hours Of 10 AM – 2 PM

I'm prone to hyperpigmentation so thanks for the tip on the fragrance in sunscreen!

I really appreciate that this post was written from the point of view of health. I'm sick of South Asian blogs proclaiming how great it is to be dark at any cost. Everyone should be proud of their color no matter what but why risk skin cancer if you don't have to?
